If, however, you are on the other side of the holidays feeling crappy about your choices and yourself, I understand completely. You are in the company of many others. But enough already. Yes, you ate some crappy food. Didn't we all? Yes, you slacked off on your workouts. Didn't we all?
Your choices over the holidays do not define your path. What you do now defines your path. Stay stuck...or get moving. Here are some things to remember.
It is unlikely that what you are feeling is all from fat gain. That would take an extraordinary amount of excess calories. More likely part is from fat, part from fluid retention due to salt, sugar, bad fats and alcohol. 3 days of clean eating gets rid of all that. Hydrate like a madman.
QUIT GETTING WEIGHED. As long as you are addicted to the scale, you will continue to battle with your weight. Like Geneen Roth says, "You don't need it to tell you whether you're allowed to like yourself today."
Almost everyone feels this way right now. Out of routine with exercise, food, sleep, water. Read my book. It has four New Years in it. Every year we all feel the same. Fat, out of shape, and lacking motivation. It's to be expected. Embrace it. OH YES- I KNOW THIS ONE. This is why they sell me all these diets, shakes, cleanses, supplements, etc. right now. This is why I look outside of myself for motivation. They know we all feel this way. Own it and move on.
If you aren't happy with your behavior/daily practice, look within. Why are you not doing what you ask of yourself? Are you beating yourself up for the 2 week binge? (never good enough, I always fail!) Are you comparing yourself to others? (never good enough) Recovering from emotions that you buried over the holidays? (I don't matter, I'm unloved, I'm unaccepted). Get the emotional blocks up into the light. Tell someone everything. EVERYTHING. Let them love you right where you are, with all your junk. If you continue to hide it, you will always believe that your dark thoughts and secrets make you unlovable or unacceptable. Prove the liar/enemy/fear wrong. Tell someone who has earned the right to hear your story.
Get moving as much as possible. Motivation comes from doing a workout. The lie is: once I am motivated I will work out. The TRUTH is: once I work out, I will be motivated. We create our motivation! We are empowered to either increase or decrease it.
My three step process for getting undone from a funk:
a. CONFESS - I confess that I let my daily practice go over the holidays. (ownership = empowerment)
b. REPENT- the definition of repent is to turn around, take a step in the other direction (do something different!)
c. FORGIVE- receive forgiveness for however long you were lost or off track, and move on
If you need reminded, read this over and over. Do this over and over. This is all normal. However, you are empowered to make a different choice. You decide when you turn around.
"What can anyone give you greater than now, starting here, right in this room, when you turn around?" - William Stafford
