Did you ever have a week where you kept getting the same message, but from difference sources or in a different form? I kept getting the same message over and over this past week.
Figure out what your very next step is, and focus on that.
I tend to dream and envision new things and get pulled in a variety of directions. Tread, for example. Tread exists because I allowed myself to dream about it without giving into the resistance that came up when I thought about it. My book exists for the same reason. I allowed that dream to flow.
However, even if I allowed myself to dream, nothing would have happened if I didn't take an action step. I wouldn't have founded Clear Rock. I wouldn't have published the book. And there would be no Tread.
Same thing applies to my fitness. I dreamed of being fit, feeling strong and empowered. But that would have stayed a vision only, had I not taken that first action step, and then another.
It can be very difficult to discern on your own what the next step is. There is just so much info out there, and an overload of advice. When we already feel like there's not enough time or money, it can feel too risky to jump in and take a chance on action. Which one is guaranteed? Which one will make my investment of time or money worthwhile?
When it all feels too big, too scary, and too risky, talk to your person and have them help you break it down. You need to find that very next doable step. The whole path does not have to be laid out before you for you to start. Just the next step.
I see women do this with their fitness, and get stuck. We want to see what the entire process is going to look like, and exactly how long it will take to "get there", before we are willing to commit to a healthier lifestyle. The problem with that is it doesn't really mitigate the fears that come along with stepping out of our comfort zone. Therefore, it doesn't help us get started.
We need the next step. The one directly in front of us. The one that leads to the step after that, and the step after that.
Some examples of next steps in the healthier lifestyle:
Find one healthy recipe that you like, buy the ingredients, and make it today.
Call a personal trainer and schedule a tour of the facility today.
Find a group fitness class that fits your schedule and budget and go do it today.
Pack your lunch today.
Fill up your water bottle and drink it today.
In the process of change, the first three important steps involve thinking about it: figure out there's a problem, think about doing something about it, prepare mentally for making a change. But then comes ACTION. I don't like getting stuck in the thinking-about-it steps. I like taking action. Yes, sometimes I find that the step wasn't in the right direction for me. I'm OK with that. I can adjust. It's when I feel stuck staring at my goals, dreams and visions out there on the horizon that I get frustrated.
So...get clear. Talk to someone who helps you see what's next (I'm really good at this if you need help), and do it. Nothing feels more empowered than taking doable action steps towards the health, fitness and life of your dreams. It doesn't have to be too big. It certainly doesn't have to be perfect. Be brave and step forward. It's worth it, and so are you.
