Subcutaneous fat is the fatty or adipose tissue lying directly under the skin layers. Subcutaneous translates to "under the skin." Subcutaneous fat is a shock absorber, helping to cushion our skin against trauma, and also stores energy, which the body uses during periods of high activity.
But somewhere along the way, we decided to come into agreement with the following:
The amount of fat I have determines my worth as a woman.
The amount of fat I have determines my beauty.
The amount of fat I have says something about my character.
If I have a certain amount of fat, I'm not fit.
Think about it. How much power does fat have over your life?
Some of us have lived most of our lives obsessed with the food we eat in an attempt to control how much fat we store on our bones. I believe we're doing this because we desperately want to feel good about ourselves. I know I do.
But removing subcutaneous fat doesn't make anyone feel better about themselves.
That's not where self esteem comes from. If you think about it, that's just so ridiculous, we should all be laughing hysterically right about now. But we're not because there is a painful truth underneath all this. We've given up a lot in life in an attempt to lose fat.
I have many clients who struggle to celebrate how fit they are, because they still feel like they have too much stored fat. How about shifting perspective and owning that you lift weights like a madwoman twice a week and have been consistently for years! How about owning how long you can hold a plank! How about owning that you can get out and walk a 5K any day of the week!
I also know women who struggle to own their worth and beauty because they still feel like they have too much stored fat. How about owning your beauty and knowing your worth! That is life-changing stuff. Slogging off a few pounds of subcutaneous fat is not. We've interwoven the two things to such a degree, we've got it backwards.
We've come to believe that the fat we carry is the cause, and when we finally conjure up enough self-control to get rid of it, we will be happy, beautiful, worthy and fit.
That is backwards.
The truth is, and you have to reflect on this deeply for it to sink in, this: The fat we carry is irrelevant and meaningless, except to point us to where we have come out of balance with the way we were created and how we were intended to live. As happy, beautiful, worthy, fit women.
Become that, know that, and watch the power fat has over you disappear.
