This week one of my fitness warriors came to me after her workout and said she would like for me to issue her a challenge to help her get back on track. My challenge back to her was for her to create her own challenge and share it with me so I can hold her accountable. The challenge wouldn’t mean anything coming from me. I can issue challenges all day long. The challenge must be personal and it must come from you. And it must, must, must be met. No matter what.
If you put a challenge out there and then don’t feel like it, you must do it anyway.
If you put a challenge out there and don’t have time, you must find time.
If you put a challenge out there and feel scared, frustrated, or unmotivated you must overcome.
If you put a challenge out there and your leg falls off, you must find a way to do it with one less leg.
The discipline of fitness is not about fitness alone. It is also about learning to do what you ask of yourself. It is about learning to trust that you know what to do, and you’ll do it. It is about learning to value yourself and then backing that up with action. To build self esteem and confidence in this area of our lives, to change our beliefs about what is possible, we must do something. Change something. Reach for something. And then make it of utmost importance to get it done not because of the pounds lost or any of that. Because of the new beliefs that will be formed. I CAN do this. I WILL succeed. YES!
So here is her challenge and here is your challenge:
I guess I can’t put this off any longer so here goes. I have been struggling for a long time trying to get back on track. I need motivated, pumped up, accountability and help. I am not planning on doing a 30 day exercise plan or diet. I need to get back with a routine. I can't do the whole process at once, so this is my plan.
I think that if I start off with this challenge of cardio exercise 4 times a week I will be adding to my 2 day a week work out with you. Then my next challenge would be to add to this, more time, intensity, whatever or healthy choices or portion control and on and on always adding. Right now I'm fairly fit and healthy and I need to take that further, add more cardio, lose the extra weight, and improve my flexibility. I need to make my remaining years good years, not stuck at home in a wheel chair. I have tried this on my own, my motivation lasts about a week, journaling, charting about 2 weeks, and here I am months later the same old same old.
I would like your help in putting this out there, see if anybody else is interested. I guess, get out the challenge and we would be accountable to you and each other. We are your group, a lot of us know each other, I think if we make a commitment to you and each other it would be more effective than joining a challenge on a website like sparks or fit chic. So...
Does anyone out there need a challenge? I am struggling to get back into a healthy routine and I want to get back on track, now before the holidays. I am committing to 4 days of cardio a week for 4 weeks with a minimum of 30 minutes. Anyone want to join me? If this particular challenge doesn't work for you pick your own and commit to it for 4 weeks. Sue is hopefully holding us accountable and we can see how we all did at the end. This is a commitment to add on to later; add time, intensity, clean eating, etc. If we keep committing to new behavior in increments and we encourage each other we each will improve. I have been with Sue a long time and I know a lot of you. I think we can help and motivate each other. -Gloria
P.S. Sue, this is so far out of my comfort zone that I have jumped out of the circle into the next room.
Gloria!! I am really excited that you put this (and yourself) out there. Way to go! I believe that by the end of this Friday I will have 100+ emails in my inbox, each from a woman who has just gotten the fire lit within her to get moving and to not sit around feeling crappy this December. So thank you!
Now everyone else hit the reply button on this email. Now write out your personal challenge to yourself for the next four weeks. Join Gloria! Support and encourage Gloria! I will compile every single challenge I get and track it for you in the next four newsletters.
This is not a time to sit around passively, wishing life was different. It can be! But you have to take steps towards your goals. Make them small, doable steps. But don’t sit on the sidelines wishing and hoping to feel better. There’s only one way to get there. Only one way…now get moving!
